Launched in 1992, the Airbus A330 quickly became one of the most reliable and versatile commercial aircraft in aviation history. Designed as a twin-engine long-haul aircraft to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330-300 made its maiden flight on 2 November 1992, followed by its EASA certification in October 1993. The A330-200, a shortened version optimised for long distances, made its maiden flight on 13 August 1997 and entered commercial service in 1998 with Air France. Since then, more than 1,500 aircraft from the A330 family have been delivered worldwide, carrying millions of passengers on transatlantic, transpacific and regional routes. Its robustness, fuel efficiency and spacious cabin have made it a favourite with airlines. But with the arrival of new generations (A330neo) and the reduction in passenger flights post-COVID, many A330-200s have reached the end of their commercial life cycle. This is where the P2F (Passenger-to-Freighter) conversion comes in, offering a strategic second life for these aircraft.
The A330-200 P2F programme is the result of a collaboration between Airbus, Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW) in Dresden and ST Engineering Aerospace. Officially launched in 2012, it aims to respond to the explosive growth in air freight, particularly with the rise of e-commerce (Amazon, Alibaba, etc.). Unlike new cargo aircraft (such as the A330-200F), the P2F uses existing fuselages, significantly reducing acquisition costs and the carbon footprint of production. A 15- to 20-year-old A330-200, still in excellent structural condition, is stripped down, reinforced and refitted for cargo transport.
Key advantages:
The A330-200 P2F combines the robustness of the A330 with state-of-the-art cargo adaptations:
