Antonov AN-225 Mriya: the World’s Largest Cargo Aircraft on a COVID Mission

Looking Back at an Extraordinary Series of Antonov AN-225 Flights

At the start of COVID-19 in Europe, governments and private companies faced a severe shortage of masks. Needs were immense, timelines critical: how to quickly deliver colossal volumes of medical freight from China to Europe? For Dynami Aviation OPS, the answer came down to a single aircraft: the Antonov AN-225 Mriya, the largest cargo aircraft in the world.

140 Tonnes of Masks on a China-Europe Route

Our team organized a series of flights between Tianjin (TSN), Vatry (XCR) and Shannon (SNN), mobilizing the AN-225 to meet the emergency and carrying about 140 tonnes of masks on the TSN-XCR route and 120 tonnes on the TSN-SNN route. Well below the AN-225’s 250-tonne maximum payload, not due to lack of performance, but because the masks took up mostly volume rather than weight.

An Icon That Became One of a Kind

Built in the 1980s for the Soviet space program, the AN-225 was a unique aircraft that became a true icon of cargo aviation. Its destruction in 2022 at Hostomel airport marked the entire aviation community, and for us these COVID operations remain among the most memorable missions carried out with this giant of the skies: a race against time, the mobilization of an entire operational chain between China and Europe, and the privilege of working with a one-of-a-kind aircraft.

A Broker's Role Facing an Extraordinary Challenge

At Dynami Aviation OPS, our job as a broker is to design and steer complete charter solutions: choosing the right machine, orchestrating every stakeholder, securing regulatory and operational aspects, to meet challenges far greater than simple transport.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Antonov AN-225 Mriya

What is the largest cargo aircraft in the world?

The Antonov AN-225 Mriya was the largest cargo aircraft in the world, a unique aircraft built in the 1980s for the Soviet space program, capable of carrying up to 250 tonnes of cargo.

No. The only AN-225 ever built was destroyed in 2022 at Hostomel airport in Ukraine, an event that marked the entire international aviation community.

At the start of the pandemic, the AN-225 was mobilized to urgently deliver colossal volumes of masks and medical equipment from China to Europe, on routes such as Tianjin-Vatry and Tianjin-Shannon.

Masks and medical equipment took up mostly volume rather than weight. The limiting factor on the mission was therefore not the aircraft’s performance but the volumetric bulk of the cargo.

The broker must choose the right machine, orchestrate every stakeholder in the logistics chain, and secure the regulatory and operational aspects of a mission of exceptional scale, in the context of a global health emergency.

No current cargo aircraft exactly matches the AN-225’s capacity. For very large-scale oversized freight, aircraft such as the Antonov An-124 Ruslan or certain specialized freighters remain possible alternatives, with lower capacity.
